+++NEWS+++
1. Add Denmark & Peru to the list of countries
with TinyApps subscribers. Thanks to those who
wrote in to set the record straight. The
country list was generated using ListMaster Pro
from AnalogX, a near-legendary site which has
recently been rekindled:
http://www.analogx.com/
2. Screenshot links are now provided for many
apps on the Internet page:
https://tinyapps.org/internet.html
They are currently linked from a screen icon
(courtesy of QBullets). If you have any ideas
on a good text-based replacement for this icon,
please send your suggestion to:
screen@xxxxxxxxxxxx
3. Instead of suffering the Internet with yet
another forum, I have decided to refer
questions to Google and the alt.comp.freeware
newsgroup. If the questioner still cannot find
a suitable answer, his/her question will appear
in the newsletter.
4. IPic - A Match Head Sized Web-Server
http://www-ccs.cs.umass.edu/~shri/iPic.html
"The world's tiniest implementation of a TCP/IP
stack and a HTTP web-server... includes all
components of a complete computer on a single
tiny micro-chip (this includes the CPU (central
processing unit), memory, serial port interface
circuitry, and clock oscillator)." Perhaps one
of the most powerful aspects: costs less than a
dollar.
5. If you are looking for a computer/CPU fan,
these folks have impressed me greatly with both
their service and prices (not an ad - just a
happy customer):

+++MORE ON SCREEN RESOLUTION+++
Many thanks to all of you sent suggestions on
changing screen resolution via a batch file
shortcut. Here are some of the answers:
1. Raymond quickly uncovered ResSwitch
(requires MFC 4.2b DLLs)
http://www.naughter.com/qres.html
"Uses the command line sent to it to change the
screen depth & resolution"
2. From frequent contributor Angel:
Multires allows to be called from a bat file.
For that game that only runs in 640x480 in 256
colors, I have created a batch file such as:
multires.exe /640,480,8
rungame
multires.exe /restore
exit
That way, my son can click on the icon
(shortcut) pointing to the bat file, which will
change resolution automatically, run the game
without messing with display properties, and
when he is finished, all will be restored to
the regular settings.
More up to date information, as well as
complete parameter and config info can be found
online at
http://www.entechtaiwan.com/multires.htm
3. From Stefan at Perpetual Motion:
Resolution Changer
http://www.skst.com/perpetualmotion/download.htm
Change your display resolution while running
any application. If you have an application
that requires a certain resolution (e.g., many
children's programs require 640x480x256
colors), you can modify that program's shortcut
to something like this:
reschange.exe 640 480 8 "d:\freddi.exe"
4. John over at AsmSource quickly & kindly
coded Resize to take command line parameters:

+++SPECIAL THANKS+++
Many thanks to:
you,
contributors to the site,
DigitalSpace
http://www.digitalspace.net/
Awesome hosting & impeccable service for $3/month.
They kindly sent the following blurb at my request:
"Digital Space opened in 1998 out of the need for
hosting a high traffic site. Landon Dirgo (Digital
Space co-founder) ran a high traffic greeting card
site that was consistently shut down for high
bandwidth usage on "unlimited plans". To support
the rental of a dedicated server, Landon and Kristin
Key (Digital Space co-founder) started the
webhosting company Digital Space, at
www.digitalspace.net. The company's first website
was a plain white page with two links "Packages and
Pricing" and "Order". Today, Digital Space houses
it's servers in its own 3,000+ square foot NOC in
the small sunny town of Lompoc, California... and
our webpage is a bit better too!"
FlexNet
http://www.flex.com/
Hawaii's first ISP, now covering most of North
America. $10/month for dialup. Instant setup. These
guys rock - check 'em out even if you don't need or
want another ISP.
FreeLists
http://www.freelists.org/
Simply amazing free mailing list service. Impressive
beyond belief.
Allen at UniDoc System
http://www.unidocsys.com/
Allen redefines the word service. A font CD I
purchased from him a year ago became unreadable, so
I asked for some help. Allen FTPed the fonts I
needed immediately and got a replacement disk out
within 24 hours. He has gained a lifelong customer
and sincerely grateful friend.

+++LEAN AND MEAN WEBSITES+++
I always say everything is a double edge sword. The
same hold true when it comes to computers. Write a
sloppy application with useless functions and the
product is bloatware - eating up your hard drive,
your RAM, and your time. If you are a follower of the
tinyapps.org philosophy then you also seek out those
"lean and mean" apps that are getting so hard to
find.
The bloatware syndrome also holds true for websites
which seem to have been infested with giant flash
downloads, oversize graphics and annoying sound
clips, bringing broadband access down to what
sometimes seems like 56K.
I came across a couple of web sites that are "lean
and mean," enough to mention in the tinyapps.org
newsletter. Cheap-cds.com <http://cheap-cds.com> has
been bold enough to join e-commerce with a real
practical, fast loading and simple web site. It's one
of my favorite places to shop because of its no
nonsense design. I don't want to have to deal with
fancy menus that take forever to load and windows
popping up all over the place - I just want to buy
some CDs.
MyRealBox.com <http://www.myrealbox.com> is another
web site that skips the trash. Novell needed a place
to test and demo its Novell Internet Messaging System
(NIMS), so they offer visitors free POP mail
accounts. The site also has a "no hog" interface -
yet it's very effective.
Kudos to myRealBox.com and cheap-cds.com

+++98lite+++
Virtually every program listed on TinyApps is
freeware. Shareware must be truly unique and
spectacular to be considered. Until now, that has
meant only two programs, Fast File Undelete &
SpinRite. Now there is a most deserving third:
98lite.
I recently had the pleasure of testing 98lite on a
standard Japanese Windows 98 install, which was
limping along on a P166 with 64mb of RAM. Result?
Nothing short of amazing. It behaves like a different
OS altogether: fast, responsive, stable.
Selected quotes from the 98lite website:
98lite is a selective feature installer for Windows
98, 98SE and Me that modularizes Windows features,
applets and sub-systems into optional components that
may be user installed and un-installed "on-the-fly".
Tailor your Windows installations to your hardware
and needs for substantial improvements in
performance, stability, and security by removing
superfluous Windows code and features you don't want
our use. 98lite makes Windows work for you;
everything is optional and without risk; previously
removed components can be effortlessly added back
with a click of your mouse.
Configure your desktop (shell) four different ways
and change from one configuration to another in
little more than a reboot.
SLEEK - a blisteringly fast incarnation of the
Windows 95 Explorer
CHUBBY - a faster Windows98 Explorer without the web
integration.
OVERWEIGHT - the fully featured Windows98 Explorer
complete with web-view and active desktop.
98MICRO - A hybrid using the Windows 95 Explorer
totally "webless" and totally protected from IE
security holes.
Don't let the number of options 98lite offers scare
you, if you don't understand or know about a
particular option remove it! If you find out you want
it back a click of a mouse is all it takes.
* Gamers - keep your bogged down fully featured
Windows for the boring stuff and then slip into
something more comfortable with a dual boot that has
enough free resources to let your games fly!
* Digital Musicians - 98micro is STABLE.
* Speed Freeks - 98micro is FAST. Period!
* Stuck on an old PC with no room to move? Need I say
more?
* Macintosh & Linux devotees remove all the redundant
layers (e.g. DirectX) and let your emulator run your
application instead of juggling with the operating
system.

0. Mike Bull has compiled a list of over 140

1. Our amazing list host, FreeLists, has started a
new email and file storage service called
MailandFiles.com: "For 5 bucks a month, you get
